Masjid Al Ghamamah Al Madinah is a majestic and highly revered mosque located in the holy city of Medina. It is one of the most ancient mosques in the city, having been built between 630 and 656 CE, making it one of the oldest surviving mosques in the world. The mosque was built by Uthman ibn Affan, who was one of the original companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The name Masjid Al Ghamamah translates to 'Mosque of Crows', which is believed to have been derived from a nearby well where crows would come to drink water. Al Madinah refers to Medina, which is also known as Yathrib before its conquest by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
The mosque itself has a large rectangular courtyard with four minarets and a single dome at its centre, with stone columns along each side. Inside, there are three prayer halls for men, women and foreign visitors respectively. There are also other facilities such as ablution rooms and lecture rooms that can be used for learning about Islam or meeting up with friends or family. The walls of Masjid Al Ghamamah are covered in beautiful calligraphy displaying verses from the Quran.
Masjid Al Ghamamah is an important religious site for Muslims all over the world who visit Medina on pilgrimage trips - it marks one of their first stops after arriving in the holy city and serves as an inspiration to stay true to their faith during their journey. Apart from being visited by pilgrims throughout the year, this magnificent mosque also hosts various Islamic events such as recitation competitions and panel discussions by scholars. On Fridays especially, thousands flock here to receive blessings from Allah while listening to sermons delivered by renowned preachers from around the world.
